Procedures

The information we present is based on what we have found over time works well for us. There may be other ways to do the same thing that might work better for you.

Safety

You are responsible for your own safety and that of those around you. We supply renovation information and know-how; however, all we are providing is information. How you use the information is your responsibility, not ours.

What does this mean? It means you need to look after your own safety. Always make sure you have a safe working environment, read, understand and follow safety instructions for tools and products, make sure you only ever undertake work within your skill set and comfort range, be prepared to call in a tradesman for help if things get beyond your ability and use your common sense. Tools can be dangerous. Working at heights can be dangerous. Glues and products can be dangerous. Make sure you know how to use your tools, use appropriate caution and personal safety equipment/protective gear and keep an eye out for hazards.

Our information assumes you have at least a basic level of knowledge about safe work; however, we highly recommend that any person using our information first skills up a little on their general safety knowledge around tools, ladders, and safe workspaces. You can find some useful videos by Safe Work Australia on these topics here: https://www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au/safety-topic/identify, assess and control hazards. There are plenty of resources out there, and it is a good idea for everyone to review safety precautions. Your local hardware store may also run free programs for basic safety and tool skills.

Where possible, we aim to point out some safety aspects in our videos; however, we do not cover everything, so make sure you do your own preparation too.

Know your limits and when to call in a professional

We are not responsible for any outcomes – DIY is great, but you need to know your limitations, particularly when it comes to tools. Not everyone is comfortable using an angle grinder or jigsaw, for example. Sometimes instructions, videos or online advice are appropriate, and you can have the satisfaction of doing the job yourself. Sometimes though, you need to engage a qualified tradesperson. We cannot tell you where the line is for you, as different people have different levels of skill when it comes to DIY, you need to work this out yourself and we are not responsible if you get it wrong.

Use your common sense when it comes to projects around the house. For example, if you are changing a washer for the first time, it may take longer than you expect. Don’t turn the water off when your flatmate is going to need a shower soon. Rushing a job often ends badly. If you are unsure of what you are doing or if your fittings are old, make sure you do the DIY during business hours when it is easy to call a plumber or other tradesperson if it does not go as well as planned. Plumbers cost a lot more when something goes wrong late on Sunday evening!

Keep in mind that DIY projects do not always work as anticipated. It really is a bit like a recipe sometimes. One cook can use a recipe to make a fantastic cake and another cook can use the same recipe and bake a failure. Our presenter is also very experienced and sometimes this can make skills seem easier than they actually are. We are not responsible for the outcome of any project you attempt using information provided by us. We also take no responsibility for any errors, misinformation, inaccurate or outdated information or misunderstanding in or arising from any content, videos, photos, comments or similar on our website. You should double-check all measurements, quantities, and instructions yourself, prior to relying on them.

We accept no liability for any outcome of projects you attempt, including and direct, indirect or consequential damage or loss you or any other person may suffer.

Prohibited work

Importantly, in some jurisdictions, there is renovation work that may only be completed by qualified tradespersons. For example, in Australia, electrical work may only be undertaken by a qualified electrician.

Local laws change from region to region, and you acknowledge that DIY items shown in our content may not be able to be undertaken by a ‘non-tradesperson’ in all jurisdictions around the world. It is your responsibility to make sure it is allowable where you live before attempting the DIY.

Products and brands

Sometimes in our videos or instructions, we will refer to a product, brand or item that we have used (you might notice Sikaflex is referred to often). Where we refer to a particular brand, there are usually other similar brands available that would be suitable. If we are using a particular product, there will also likely be other similar products that can do the job. Just because we think something is great doesn’t mean it will be suitable for your specific circumstances. As always, you need to look after your own interests – make sure the product or brand is suitable for your needs, undertake additional research if necessary, and make sure you read and understand instructions and safety information that attaches to the product before purchasing or using the product. We take no responsibility for any loss or damage you suffer based on any recommendation we make or any third-party link provided by us.

The names of actual companies and products mentioned, displayed, or unintentionally identified on this website or our content may be the trademarks of their respective owners. Unless we have specifically stated otherwise, no association with any the company, organization, product, person, or event is intended or should be inferred. For example, if we show you a product within a hardware store in a video, this should not be inferred to mean we represent that hardware store or that the hardware store in any manner endorses what we do. Sometimes, it is just easier to actually show you the product at the store to make it easier for you to source your tools and materials. We do try to keep branding out of our videos; however, sometimes we slip up, and some hardware stores are very recognizable even if their branding is not shown.
